Safer Internet Day is an EU wide initiative to promote a safer internet  for all users, especially young people. It is promoted in Ireland by the PDST Technology in Education and Webwise. This year's Safer Internet Day (SID) took place on Tuesday, 10th February 2015.

Promoted in Ireland by the PDST Technology in Education and Webwise, the whole point of SID is to raise awareness of how we all can help create a better internet.

At the Safer Internet Day launch event ‪ on Monday 9th February, research on internet usage by children was launched showing that cyberbullying is now more common than face-to-face bullying

The report also showed that Irish schools above the EU average in tackling Internet Safety.

This year Webwise is offering free anti-bullying wristbands and badges for any school who shares their plans for celebrating SID. The theme for the 2015 event is “Let’s create a better internet together” and the hashtags #Up2Us and #SID2015 will be used to help raise awareness online.

Webwise also launched it's "MySelfie – Primary Anti-Cyber Bullying" lesson plan for schools. You can download the Teachers Handbook or Request a free hard copy.

The Safer Internet Day website has a list of events and suggested classroom-based activities for marking SID. If you’re interested in focusing celebrations around the topic of cyber bullying Watch Your Space has ideas on how to promote a more inclusive online environment. From interactive poster campaigns to RASK (Random Acts of Kindness) Days, this site highlights examples of best practice from schools around Ireland.

Safer Internet Day Ambassador Programme
As a part of it's Safer Internet Day 2015 campaign, Webwise is reaching out to post-primary students and encouraging and supporting them as they address the issue of cyber bullying by leading awareness raising  campaigns in their clubs, schools, and communities.
