On Tuesday, February 10th more than 100 different countries will celebrate Safer Internet Day 2015 (SID) to promote a better internet for children. In Ireland, SID is promoted by the Professional Development Service for Teachers.

To mark the day, we are launching a new Primary Anti-Cyber Bullying Resource, which will help your school meet the education and prevention strategy requirements of the Anti-Bullying Procedures. MySelfie and the Wider World is an SPHE resource developed to engage 5th and 6th class students on the topic of cyberbullying with a series of short high-quality animations as the centrepiece. This resource is the result of collaboration between Webwise in PDST Technology in Education and the PDST Health and Wellbeing team, with inputs from the Special Education Support Service and the Inspectorate. You can get a free copy of the resource for your school by placing a pre-order here today.

Elsewhere, schools across the country are taking action to promote safer, more effective use of the internet by children. They are sharing their stories on an interactive map  on the saferinternetday.ie website and in return we are sending them wristbands and badges. So far we have 60 schools signed up; we expect this to double in the coming days with your support.

Your school can get involved in Safer Internet Day 2015 by:

  • Trying out some of the Safer Internet Day activities for schools. From positive message campaigns to a maths exercise on what happens when photos go viral, there is something for everybody.
  • Entering the #Up2Us Super Selfie Competition. To be in with a chance of winning a 'GoPro' camera all you need to do is share a photo to #UP2US on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram that shows what you are doing for Safer Internet Day.
  • Telling us what your school will do to mark the day. We will then send out free wristbands and badges for all, to add to the fun!
  • Showing one of these internet safety videos at assembly or in class on Safer Internet Day 2015.

We really hope that your school will join us in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2015.
