ePortfolios: Using Digital Tools for Content Creation, Collaboration and Assessment (Primary) (online)

An interactive online course providing all you need to know about using an ePortfolio to support assessment in your classroom. During the course you will explore digital tools which support assessment and see them in action in primary classrooms.You will also learn how to create an ePortfolio system for your own class/es. This course is adapted from the post primary EU Folio course, which was designed and produced as part of the EU Folio Project (www.eufolio.eu).

PrerequisitesBasic ICT skills. Participants should have experience of carrying out basic ICT tasks (opening, editing, saving, closing files) and be proficient in using an Internet browser. Prior experience of participating in an online course will be an advantage.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be enabled to:

  • Understand the key elements of assessment for and of learning
  • Identify digital tools as part of ePortfolios to support assessment
  • Evaluate and use digital tools to gather interpret and use assessment information to inform teaching and learning
  • Create and manage an ePortfolio system 
  • Identify issues relating to the management and administration of ePortfolios.

Course Content

This is a highly interactive online course which consists of the following 5 modules:

Module 1 – Understanding Assessment

In this introductory module, participants will explore assessment and become familiar with the terminology associated with assessment. They will also explore ways in which teachers use ICT to support assessment.

Module 2 – Understanding ePortfolios – From Paper Portfolios to ePortfolios

This module will look at the differences between paper and ePortfolios, and provide an overview of the features and benefits of an ePortfolio system.

Module 3 – ePortfolio Functions

Participants will be introduced to the storage, workspace and showcase functions of ePortfolio systems and will learn how to use these to support assessment.

Module 4 – ePortfolios to Support Assessment

Participants will explore how ePortfolios can support assessment, as well as learning about the use of ePortfolios to support feedback and self-assessment.

Module 5 – ePortfolio Implementation

Participants will explore the implementation of ePortfolios in a school environment, including the consideration of the roles of teachers and pupils in the implementation process.
