Finding Information Online for the Primary Classroom (online)

In this course, you will learn how to find reliable, age-appropriate information online and develop techniques for evaluating the credibility of online information. You will be introduced to tools, such as Scoilnet, Scoilnet Learning Paths and World Book Online, that will help you to find and share useful information and resources. You will look at some search engines that have been developed to help children search online.

PrerequisitesBasic ICT skills. Participants should have experience of carrying out basic ICT tasks (opening, editing, saving, closing files) and be proficient in using an Internet browser.

The course content includes:

  • Descriptions of different methods for searching online including some child-friendly search engines
  • Guidance on how to evaluate the credibility of information found online
  • Demonstration of how to use Scoilnet to find online education resources
  • Demonstration of how to use the Learning Path feature of Scoilnet to select, organise and share online resources
  • Demonstration of some of the key features of World Book Online
  • Opportunities to create classroom activities that promote critical thinking and evaluation of online information by your pupils
  • Opportunities to use Scoilnet Learning Paths to create a collection relevant to a topic you teach in class.
